2018 / Pinot Noir
Due to its unique location within the Russian River Valley appellation, the Rayhill Vineyard stands out above the rest. This ridgetop vineyard experiences an exceptional amount of sunlight during the growing season and is acclaimed for its well-drained Goldridge sandy loam soils and an ideal climate. Coming in from the Bodega Bay, afternoon westerly seas breeze delay the ripening process, allowing the fruit to reach true phenological maturity. Handpicked and barrel aged in French oak for 10 months, the 2018 Rayhill Pinot Noir is beautifully complex with notes of red berry jam and savory leather followed by a balanced finish.

Medium ruby color and beautifully complex with attractive aromas of red and black fruit, including cherry, pomegranate, and raspberry with barrel spice, licorice, subtle dried herbs, cola and a touch of oak and a slight floral accent. The palate is moderate to nearly full showing a great balance of complex elements. The palate shows black and red cherry, red berry jam and baking spice on entry. The mid-palate has savory and dusty notes with leather and elegant, supporting tannins lasting into a moderately long, complex and beautifully balanced finish with sustained fruit and subtle camphor notes.
This is a complex wine that carries its weight gracefully and can be enjoyed now or would be a great candidate to save a bottle or two for a few years. Try it with grilled lamb chops, simply prepared with salt, pepper and a little garlic, sprinkled occasionally with a little lemon juice as it is being grilled. It would also be perfect with hard cheeses like mimolette or pecorino served with prosciutto or jamón.
