2016 Hop Kiln Estate Reserve Pinot NoirOne of the most exciting developments we have seen here in the last few years is Landmark’s addition of the Hop Kiln Estate in the prestigious Middle Reach of the Russian River Valley. This privileged location has the potential to grow great pinot noir and chardonnay, as shown by the list of our well-known neighbors, including Rochioli, MacRostie, Bacigalupi, Williams Selyem, and Ramey, who make some of the best examples of quality wines from these varieties.

Making great wine requires a lot of planning and, above all, patience. Over two years in the making, the new 2016 Landmark Hop Kiln Estate Reserve Pinot Noir is a truly special limited release of only six barrels (150 cases) made entirely of our finest estate wine from our new property. It’s finally ready for release in a specially designed bottle featuring the historic Hop Kiln building etched in gold—a true collector’s edition.

Winemaker Greg Stach selected clones from the entire estate with the most potential to express the very definition of Pinot Noir from the esteemed Russian River Valley AVA. Based on the region’s hallmark ripe black cherry notes brightened with red berry highlights and classic cola spice, he painstakingly chose a group of 35% new premium French oak barrels to perfectly complement each component’s character. The result is a wine that has depth of fruit with complex spice notes, a counterpoint of attractive savory elements, and a perfectly balanced structure that proudly shows the heart and soul of the Russian River Valley, a benchmark of quality Pinot Noir wines. This elusive mix of power and grace not only defines the character of the best Pinots of California, but also that of the best from Burgundy, like Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny.

There are very few grape varieties with the breadth of food-pairing possibilities that pinot noir offers, particularly with wines that straddle this razor’s edge of strength and finesse the way the 2016 Hop Kiln Estate Reserve Pinot Noir does. Its depth, complexity of fruit, layered spice and attractive savory flavors combined with its balance and freshness on the palate make it a wine that is equally well matched with a special meal of wild Pacific salmon with a chanterelle mushroom sauce or with a classic Beef Bourguignon, not to mention an array of duck, lamb or pork possibilities.
