Distinctly Dark: Escolle Road Pinot Noir
We owe the uniqueness of Landmark’s Escolle Road Pinot Noir to two things above all else: the place and the people. On the hills overlooking the Salinas Valley, nestled between Monterey Bay and the Santa Lucia Mountains, sensitive pinot noir grapes are grown with care by the Caraccioli family. The unique confluence of ocean air and mountain winds, combined with the expert craftsmanship of the Caracciolis, results in a truly world-class Pinot Noir.
Each year, the Landmark winemaking team can easily identify the arrival of Escolle Road grapes by their distinct blackish-purple skins as they are delivered to the crush pad. 2017 was a wonderful harvest all around, with even ripening, concentration, and surprisingly dark color for a pinot noir. With the delicate skin extraction techniques employed by our winemaking team, including cold soaking and punch-downs, Winemaker Greg Stach was able to achieve a dynamic wine with restraint and balance of fruit and oak.
