2021 / Chardonnay
The 2021 Sangiacomo Vineyard Chardonnay is sourced from grapes grown at the Kiser Vineyard off Arnold Drive in the cool and windy Sonoma Carneros AVA just north of San Pablo Bay. This venerable appellation is highly regarded as one of the finest places in California to grow cool climate chardonnay. Winemaker Greg Stach’s passion for the highly desired and low yielding Old Wente selection, with its characteristic uneven berry sizing, allows him to craft a wine that give a true sense of place. Each lot was whole-cluster pressed and allowed to settle for two days before being racked to French oak barrels (35% new). An indigenous fermentation with yeast on the grapes ferments the wine to dryness and lees stirring is performed every two weeks to help create a creamy mouthfeel. The Chardonnay is encouraged to go through full malolactic fermentation and is bottled unfiltered.

Pale straw color with moderate tearing on the glass. The nose is powerful, with notes of apricot, spiced pear, chamomile, white flowers, and vanilla. The wine is dry and balanced on the palate with a rounded texture and moderate acidity and body. Sustained fruit notes of baked yellow apple and Meyer lemon are accented by the earthiness of chanterelle mushrooms, river rocks, and a subtle herbal component on the finish.
The 2021 Sangiacomo Chardonnay is robust with savory flavors that pair beautifully with dishes such as wild mushroom and ricotta ravioli served in a light cream sauce topped with freshly shaved black truffles. Alternatively, washed-rind sheep milk cheese makes the perfect counterpart for this Chardonnay.
